Christening on the Giudecca Canal

Adding a new vessel to an established fleet requires a calculated introduction to the market. Emerald Cruises officially christened its third superyacht, Emerald Kaia, during an outdoor ceremony at the San Basilio terminal in Venice. Positioned directly on the Giudecca Canal, the event allowed current passengers to observe the proceedings from the yacht’s upper decks. The naming ceremony coincided with the fortieth anniversary of Scenic Group, utilizing the historic Italian waterway to underscore the brand’s long-term expansion in the boutique cruising sector.

Honoring Longtime Operational Personnel

Shipyards and cruise lines typically select high-profile celebrities to act as godparents, but Emerald Cruises shifted focus internally for this specific launch. The company appointed Kim Scoular, director of operations, and Ray Gilbert, senior software engineer, to fulfill the roles. Chairman and founder Glen Moroney noted that selecting these veteran employees reflects the operational dedication required to sustain four decades of corporate growth. During the event, Jason Flesher, director of discovery operations, utilized a mountain climbing rope to assist the godparents in breaking the traditional Champagne bottle across the bow.

Upgrading the Passenger Footprint

Constructed by the team at MKM Yachts, the 128-passenger Emerald Kaia builds heavily upon the structural foundation established by its predecessors, Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara. The design team prioritized physical space, introducing an expanded Observation Deck and a revised Sun Deck equipped with private cabanas and an indoor lounge. The accommodations follow this exact mandate, featuring Owners Suites measuring 131 square meters and Yacht Suites offering 82 square meters, both integrating wraparound private balconies to maximize exterior sightlines.

Designing the Deck Layouts

The external architecture and interior programming build directly upon the foundations established by the brand’s preceding vessels, Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara. The engineering team integrated an expanded Observation Deck and a Sun Deck featuring private cabanas and an indoor lounge. For dining, the yacht introduces the Night Market Grill, a highly exclusive Asian-style culinary concept restricted to just eight guests per seating. At the waterline, a dedicated Marina Lounge provides guests with direct access to the sea.

Future Fleet Expansion

The delivery of Emerald Kaia signals the start of a broader acquisition phase for the cruise operator. The vessel is the first of a new three-ship class. Emerald Cruises has already scheduled the launch of Emerald Raiya for 2027, followed by Emerald Xara in 2028. Following its initial Mediterranean run, Emerald Kaia will reposition to navigate the Seychelles and the Indian Ocean, pushing the brand’s boutique operations into warmer, more remote waters.
