A Command Performance for Coastal Waters

Traditional expedition vessels frequently prioritize massive ice-class hulls, often locking owners out of the world’s most delicate, shallow-water destinations. Designer Misha Merzliakov is shifting that paradigm with Shogun, a 42-metre all-aluminium explorer yacht concept inspired by Japanese military heritage and introduced specifically for the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show. Translating to “commander of the army,” the Shogun name directly informs the vessel’s bold, deliberate design language. Conceived alongside the naval architecture team at Periscope Naval Architects, this platform targets an intrepid owner profile focused squarely on remote, tropical exploration.

Engineering for Shallow Tropical Reefs

The architectural success of an island-hopping explorer depends entirely on its vertical metrics. Shogun carries a wide 9-metre beam but maintains a highly precise 2.5-meter draft within a sub-500 GT envelope. This deliberate low-draft arrangement grants the captain immediate access to shallow reef systems, hidden lagoons, and tight river anchorages that remain completely closed to standard vessels of this length. It is a configuration optimized specifically for surf-led itineraries and uncharted coastal navigation where versatility dictates the route.

Dissolving Seascape Boundaries

Rather than mimicking the dense, heavy interiors of northern latitude trawlers, the living spaces on board are defined by coastal minimalism and a sense of restrained luxury. Merzliakov utilized extensive structural glazing throughout the main decks, allowing the natural light and the surrounding scenery to dominate the interior experience. This design approach actively dissolves the boundary between the internal lounges and the outside environment, rendering the vessel equally fitting for isolated South Pacific breaks or crowded Mediterranean berths.

Adaptable Multi-Salon Logistics

The layout accommodates 10 to 12 guests alongside an active crew of eight, distributing personnel across highly functional communal zones. The structural arrangement includes two main salons, which owners can modify into a full-beam sky lounge configuration depending on their entertainment needs. Social spaces flow directly onto open-air dining areas, which lead down to a dedicated aft beach club. Equipped with hydraulic hull-side openings and an integrated transom platform, this waterfront zone guarantees an unhindered, fluid connection to the sea.

Efficiency on Long-Range Transits

True maritime independence requires a mechanical package that balances raw range with operational efficiency. Powered by twin propulsion units, Shogun clocks a maximum speed of 15 knots and maintains a highly economical cruising speed of approximately 10 knots. This performance profile maximizes fuel longevity during transoceanic crossings. Completing the exploration asset list is a custom Salt A44 chase boat engineered by Salt Yachts, paired with a massive collection of water toys stowed securely both above and below deck.
