The Commercial Reality of 3D Modeling

The maritime manufacturing process generates massive volumes of intricate 3D models and precise architectural data. However, this valuable intellectual property historically languishes in localized servers once the initial vessel construction concludes, severely limiting its long-term commercial utility. Addressing this operational gap, ClassNK launched the “ClassNK Design Data Marketplace” on 15 June 2026. This co-creation digital platform functions as a targeted matching site, connecting the shipyards and design firms that own the data with software vendors capable of utilizing it.

The Digital Twin Initiative

This marketplace directly evolved from the broader Digital Twin Project. Through this initiative, classification societies, shipowners, and software providers collaborated to evaluate a secure framework for exchanging critical operational and design information. The core objective focuses on extending the value of vessel-specific data across the entire lifecycle of a ship, directly improving operational safety and overall performance at sea. By executing comprehensive feasibility studies, ClassNK structured the platform to operate strictly as an impartial and neutral entity.

Structuring the Closed-System Network

To protect the proprietary assets of its participants, the platform operates entirely as a membership-based closed system. This structure ensures it functions as a regulated legal marketplace where members must comply with specific terms governing the handling of design data. Participants can register their 3D models or specific services into a centralized library, allowing other members to search, evaluate, and compare relevant information tailored to their precise operational needs.

Defining Stakeholder Boundaries

The operational framework categorizes users into three distinct roles to maintain strict control over intellectual property. Model Providers retain full management authority and all intellectual property rights over their data. They grant Service Providers the necessary licenses to utilize these models strictly for delivering targeted services to Service Users. To prevent unauthorized distribution, Service Providers are explicitly prohibited from transferring raw model data directly to any user without securing prior approval from the original provider.

Execution and Market Access

ClassNK structured this network to remove financial barriers to entry, offering access to the marketplace completely free of charge. The operator solely manages the centralized member site and explicitly avoids participating in the individual usage agreements or service contracts executed between the members. By clearly defining permissible use cases and establishing a secure environment for information exchange, this platform enables the commercial maritime sector to aggressively pursue new value creation through structured digital collaboration.
