Robotic Hull Maintenance
Commercial marine maintenance constantly balances thorough cleaning against the risk of degrading expensive hull coatings. The KeelCrab Pro addresses this direct conflict. Engineered and manufactured entirely in Italy, this professional underwater robot is designed specifically for routine maintenance and high-definition inspection of yacht and pleasure boat hulls. By generating a powerful suction effect through a marinised pump motor, the unit maintains perfect adherence to the hull, allowing its rubber tracks to navigate and maneuver across complex underwater geometries.
Preserving Antifouling Integrity
A primary concern during hull cleaning is the preservation of protective paints. The KeelCrab Pro tackles this by utilizing A.N.C.C.P. certified counter-rotating brushes. The standard kit includes white, yellow, and medium stainless steel brushes, each tailored for different maintenance intervals and varying degrees of algal or vegetative fouling. These brushes are specifically designed to clean without removing hard matrix, silicone, or biocide-free antifouling paints. Regular removal of the top layer of vegetation (3 to 5 mm) actually extends the effective life of the underlying paint, thereby slowing barnacle formation and reducing overall vessel fuel consumption.
The Professional Toolkit
The KeelCrab Pro arrives as a comprehensive package designed to support commercial marine service providers. The core drone is paired with a 7-inch remote control display, a high-definition camera, and twin 400-lumen LEDs for clear visibility in murky marina waters. The system runs on a 20-meter Kevlar-reinforced neutral-negative cable connected to a 220-110V to 24V external electronics box. Furthermore, the unit features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing professionals to stream video directly to a smartphone or tablet and immediately share inspection screenshots with their clients.
Enhancing the Diver Experience
For commercial divers, manual hull scraping is physically exhausting and time-consuming. The KeelCrab Pro can be upgraded with a Diver Pack to mitigate this fatigue. This optional kit adds two side handles and an IP69 switch directly to the drone, transforming it into a manually steerable underwater mower. Divers can utilize the robot to clean the vast majority of the hull surface effortlessly, reserving their physical energy exclusively for intricate manual work around appendages, propeller shafts, and rudders.
Operational Capabilities
The drone boasts a significant cleaning capacity of 7 square meters per minute. In practical terms, this allows an operator to complete a routine cleaning on a 12-meter boat in approximately one hour, while an 18-meter vessel requires about two hours. To prevent removed vegetation from reattaching to the hull in stagnant marina waters, the robot is equipped with a variable micrometry nylon filter bag that collects the waste material immediately during the cleaning cycle.
