The Protector Expedition Series Delivers 5.6 Square Meters of Usable Hardtop Space

Updating the Protector Architecture

Rayglass Boats is shifting its production focus toward extended offshore capability. Operating as a primary division within Brunswick Corporation, the New Zealand-based manufacturer recently launched the Protector Expedition Series. This introduction marks the first severe evolution of the brand’s hardtop design in nearly seven years. Built strictly upon the established 380 and 410 hull platforms, the Expedition configuration provides the heavy-duty functionality required for serious coastal cruising and commercial applications.

Extending the Hardtop Dimensions

Running through volatile weather systems dictates a reliance on massive overhead coverage. The engineering team executed a complete redesign of the traditional hardtop, adding 800 mm of overall length across the fore and aft sections. This structural modification creates 5.6 square meters of flat, usable roof space. Owners can directly utilize this reinforced area to mount heavy offshore equipment, including solar panels, mountain bikes, kayaks, and specialized roof racks, keeping the primary deck clear for operational crew movement.

Forward-Sloping Windscreen Dynamics

Altering the exterior profile directly impacts the internal helm experience. Rayglass integrated a forward-sloping windscreen into the new Expedition cabin structure. This specific angle drastically reduces harsh screen glare during midday transits and heavily mitigates interior glass condensation in colder climates. Combined with elongated side windows, the revised glasshouse delivers a highly functional, open helm environment while maximizing the physical volume available for mounting large-format marine electronics.

Powertrain and Mercury Marine Options

Pushing a reinforced offshore platform requires serious mechanical thrust. The builder outfits the Expedition series with multiple propulsion packages tailored to the buyer’s operational requirements. Operators can specify traditional inboard setups pushing up to 740 horsepower. For those demanding maximum velocity and exterior maintenance access, the transom accommodates massive outboard configurations utilizing Mercury Marine hardware, scaling up to an aggressive 1,200-horsepower output.

European Superyacht Origins

This specific architectural shift originated directly from client demand rather than internal speculation. In late 2022, the owner of a major European superyacht contracted Ancasta Yacht Services to commission a highly customized Protector build. The resulting vessel generated immediate traction across the global market. Recognizing the distinct shift in consumer preference toward European-influenced, adventure-ready tenders, Rayglass rapidly developed the Expedition Series. The shipyard is currently fabricating new molds to fulfill the sudden influx of international orders across the complete Protector range.
