Shifting the Dayboat Paradigm

The leisure dayboat sector demands immediate accessibility and absolute ease of operation. The design office at Tofinou recognized that electrifying their 7.9 model required more than simply swapping the drivetrain. The objective centered on crafting a propulsion layout that preserved the yacht’s sailing performance while actively minimizing maintenance. Partnering with TEMO, the shipyard developed a solution specifically tailored to coastal cruising and intuitive handling. The resulting 7.20-metre hull prioritizes outdoor living without the mechanical burden of traditional combustion systems.

The TEMO POD 3000 Configuration

Determining the precise power output is critical for a lightweight sailing vessel. Tofinou concluded that a 3-kilowatt output provides ample thrust for the 7.9 platform. The selected TEMO POD 3000 operates on a 48-volt nominal architecture, delivering 3,100 watts of motor output. This mechanical package is supported by an 8-amp shore charger and a 350-watt onboard charger. Buyers can also specify an optional GORI folding two-blade propeller to further reduce hydrodynamic drag while under sail.

Modular Energy Management

Relying strictly on marina infrastructure limits operational flexibility. To decouple the vessel from shore power, the designers incorporated a removable battery framework. The system utilizes two TEMO 2.3 kWh batteries secured within an AutoConnect Rack. This modular approach heavily benefits owners who keep their boats on swinging moorings or isolated anchorages. The battery packs detach easily, allowing operators to transport them home for charging exactly like an e-bike component.

Precision Throttle Dynamics

Maneuvering a dayboat within tight marina confines requires absolute control. Tofinou and TEMO engineered a dedicated throttle control integrated directly at the helm station. This specific placement allows the skipper to maintain a natural steering posture while dictating immediate forward or reverse thrust. The electric motor delivers instantaneous response times, completely stripping away the noise and intense vibrations associated with low-speed docking procedures.

Expanding the Global Fleet

The implementation of intelligent electric systems is actively altering the coastal cruising landscape. Multiple Tofinou 7.9 hulls equipped with the TEMO architecture are currently actively sailing across various international waters. The operational fleet spans from the French Atlantic coast to inland lakes, with one unit actively navigating Australian waters. This geographical spread confirms that integrating quiet, low-maintenance electric propulsion directly aligns with the evolving demands of modern dayboat owners.
