Real-Time Cetacean Tracking Connects Starlink Hardware with Chartplotter Displays

Collision Risks on Migration Routes

As Pacific gray whales travel south between November and January and humpbacks navigate toward Hawaii, Mexico, and Central America, offshore passages intersect directly with heavy cetacean activity. Vessel strikes remain a primary threat to large marine mammals globally. Sailing hulls present a unique hazard because their silent motion through the water prevents surfacing mammals from detecting an approaching keel in time to submerge.

Telemetry and Acoustic Integration

PredictWind developed its Orca & Whale Watch feature to give operators actionable situational awareness. The system pulls continuous telemetry from the Whale Alert database, which was established through joint research by NOAA and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). By blending public sighting reports with NOAA Fisheries’ offshore acoustic detection arrays, the software projects active cetacean positions within an adjustable radius directly onto compatible navigation screens.

Two-Way Crowdsourced Reporting

Modern navigational tools rely heavily on network effects to maintain accuracy across isolated waters. The software allows crew members to log live whale sightings directly from the helm, feeding observational data back into the central network. This crowdsourced input updates the broader fleet in real time, transforming individual cruising yachts into active observation nodes that continuously refine the regional map for trailing vessels.

Hardware and DataHub Requirements

Executing this real-time overlay requires specific hardware capabilities on board. The feature operates exclusively through PredictWind’s DataHub running firmware 4.24 or later, paired with an active NMEA2000 GPS connection or a built-in GPS feed. Because the platform streams continuous position updates, it requires a high-speed internet link via Starlink, 4G/5G LTE, or PredictWind’s GO exec. Standard low-bandwidth Iridium GO! connections cannot support the data throughput required for this specific tracking software.

Elevating Helm Awareness

Integrating wildlife tracking directly into primary chartplotter interfaces represents a practical shift in passage planning. Rather than relying on static seasonal notices or visual deck watches alone, captains gain a dynamic interface that highlights active marine life corridors. This continuous data stream allows crews to adjust transit speeds or modify courses proactively, protecting both vulnerable marine species and vessel keels during high-density migration windows.
