Transitioning Heavy Bulk Logistics
Decarbonizing massive maritime logistics networks requires highly adaptable propulsion hardware rather than conceptual promises. Everllence continues to push alternative fuel implementation by successfully testing the world’s first ethanol-capable G80 motor. This development stems directly from a cooperation agreement established in February 2026 with Brazilian mining operator Vale. The resulting hardware is specifically designed to handle the heavy demands of the hard-to-abate bulk shipping sector while maintaining absolute operational reliability.
The Tri-Fuel G80 Platform
The newly verified G80 B&W ME-LGIMe operates as a fully flexible tri-fuel platform. Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at Everllence, confirmed the motor seamlessly burns fuel oil, methanol, ethanol, or any precise blend of the latter two liquids. This multi-fuel capability provides operators with critical flexibility as low-carbon fuel availability continues to fluctuate across global ports. The system builds upon the established ME-LGIM architecture, adapting proven methanol injection technology for dedicated ethanol integration.
Verification at Hyundai Heavy Industries
Theoretical capabilities mean very little without rigorous physical validation. To prove the viability of this ethanol setup, the G80 underwent comprehensive R&D testing at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery division in Korea. The facility successfully verified the motor’s performance metrics, ensuring it meets the strict safety requirements necessary for transoceanic operations. This successful test officially moves the project from the design phase into tangible physical implementation.
The Shandong Shipping and Vale Fleet
This specific G80 unit is not a standalone prototype. It is bound for the third hull in a massive ten-vessel series of Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOC) ordered by Shandong Shipping. Vale will charter these specialized carriers to support its global mining logistics chain. The integration of the tri-fuel G80 allows Vale to aggressively reduce emissions across its maritime operations while dealing with the current complexities of low-carbon fuel sourcing. Delivery for this specific vessel is officially slated for early 2027.
Scaling Alternative Fuel Adoption
Christian Ludwig, Vice President of Global Sales for Everllence’s Two-Stroke Business, noted that interest in ethanol has climbed significantly over the past five years. With over 250 methanol orders already secured and more than 100 actively in service, Everllence applies proven dual-fuel manufacturing to this new ethanol project. The company anticipates the primary demand for this specific tri-fuel hardware will originate from operators managing heavy bulk carriers, tankers, and container vessels.
