Dedicated Service Routes and Tri-Deck Volume Characterize the Steeler Yachts 88
Expanding the Ocean Explorer Range
Developing a flagship model requires a shipyard to push the established boundaries of its existing platforms. Dutch builder Steeler Yachts recently expanded its portfolio with the introduction of the 26.7-metre Ocean Explorer 88. This new iteration builds upon the foundation of the Ocean Explorer 67, 72, and 85 models, operating as the first vessel within the line to feature a comprehensive tri-deck configuration. Despite measuring less than a metre longer than the 85, the manufacturer emphasizes that the 88 represents a fundamentally distinct yacht in terms of internal volume and deck layout.
Structural Engineering and Beam Expansion
The physical presence of the Ocean Explorer 88 relies heavily on its widened footprint. Designed in direct collaboration with Dutch designer Pim Dijksman, the architecture incorporates an expanded beam measuring 7.5 metres. The hull utilizes round-bilged steel displacement construction paired with an aluminium superstructure, maintaining the manufacturing standards established throughout the broader Ocean Explorer series. This increased width, combined with the tri-deck setup, allows the shipyard to incorporate a separate bridge deck, extensive crew and service zones, and a dedicated spa and wellness area located directly behind the wheelhouse.
Operational Separation and Guest Accommodation
Maximizing privacy during extended voyages dictates the internal traffic flow. The expanded beam enables a clear physical separation between guest accommodations, crew operations, and general navigation sectors. The main deck features the primary living areas, a U-shaped seating arrangement aft, and a separate service galley with independent crew routing. The four-cabin accommodation layout includes a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, with one VIP and two double guest cabins situated on the lower deck. A dedicated captain’s cabin rests near the bridge, while separate lower-deck quarters sleep a crew of four.
Transoceanic Range and Equipment Storage
True exploration demands severe logistical capability. The tri-deck volume allows for drastically increased storage capacity for heavy provisions and operational equipment. A specialized “work deck” positioned aft of the bridge is engineered to securely store two tenders measuring up to seven metres in length. Standard propulsion is handled by twin MAN D2676 engines, which are projected to deliver an autonomous cruising range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles.
Scaling Shipyard Operations
The introduction of the 88 aligns with the shipyard’s calculated expansion. Steeler Yachts CEO Yorrith Joosten confirmed that the development of this line was directly facilitated by the acquisition of a new manufacturing facility located in Meppel. The vessel will be constructed to RINA Pleasure Yacht classification. Furthermore, the yard remains highly active across the range, recently announcing the sale of the third unit from the Ocean Explorer 85 series, which is currently under construction and slated for delivery in 2027.
