Carbon Rigging and Retractable Keels: ICE Yachts Brings Two Offshore Cruisers to Cannes
Debuting at Cannes
The international sailing community shifts its focus to the French Riviera this September. ICE Yachts is preparing to present two premium models at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival, running from September 8 to September 13. The Italian manufacturer will utilize this event for the world premiere of the ICE80 Blue Water and the ICE70 Sport, establishing a distinct presence on the docks. These platforms represent the shipyard’s current trajectory toward building fast cruisers that merge serious racing capabilities with the amenities required for long-range offshore transits.
The ICE80 Flagship
Operating as the new flagship for the yard, the 23.99-metre ICE80 Blue Water features a thoroughbred character sculpted through an ongoing collaboration with Felci Yacht Design. The exterior profile relies on a sweeping reverse sheerline and flush-mounted under-deck hardware to maintain a clean aesthetic. Drawing visual cues from classic marine architecture, the design incorporates an innovative curved glass windshield inspired directly by the 1960s Riva Super Aquarama. This specific addition provides functional weather protection while sustaining the vessel’s elegant, majestic lines.
Structural Carbon and Keel Mechanics
Heavy displacement severely hinders sailing speed, prompting the builder to rely heavily on advanced composites. The ICE80 structure consists of a full carbon vacuum infusion utilizing epoxy resin, keeping the overall displacement strictly to 37 tonnes. To manage draft requirements, the yacht employs an APM telescopic lifting keel manufactured via CNC machining, which varies the depth between 3.10 metres and 4.70 metres. The steering system features an autoclave-cured carbon rudder stock and JP3 race bushings, transferring precise feedback directly to the helm. A Bamar in-boom furling system handles the 180-square-metre mainsail, supported entirely by a high-modulus carbon fiber mast.
The ICE70 Sport Configuration
Targeting owners who prioritize aggressive speed, the 21.30-metre ICE70 Sport strips back weight to achieve a 27.03-tonne displacement. Developed alongside Umberto Felci, the hull utilizes a glass and carbon hybrid epoxy infusion, while the deck relies on a full carbon construction. The draft is managed by a high-precision Cariboni hydraulic lifting keel, operating between 2.75 metres and 4.47 metres to permit access to shallower waters. The sail plan is driven by an Axxon carbon fiber mast and furling boom, supported by Harken electric winches to effectively manage the 150-square-metre mainsail and 388-square-metre A2 gennaker.
Transitioning to the Open Ocean
Below deck, both vessels maintain a clear focus on the offshore experience. The ICE80 utilizes premium-grade natural teak across its outdoor spaces, transitioning to a highly sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere internally. The integration of a modern 48V electrical system across the flagship provides significant weight savings, directly benefiting its overall velocity. Conversely, the ICE70 Sport leans into a sporty minimalism below deck, pairing premium materials with the technological solutions necessary for extended bluewater cruising. These structural choices position the Italian builder to strongly appeal to owners seeking highly capable, long-range platforms.
